Day of Ashura (عاشوراء) is the 10th day of the month of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. While own Ashura means tenth.
Day became famous because for the majority Shiites and Sufis is the martyrdom day of mourning for Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet of Islam Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala in 61 AH (680). However, Sunnis believe that Prophet Moses fasted on this day to express their joy in God because the Jews are freed from Fira'un (Exodus). According to Sunni tradition, Muhammad fasted on the day and asking people to fast anyway.
